Description:

Lake Cumberland is an artificial lake in Clinton, Laurel, McCreary, Pulaski, Russell, and Wayne counties in Kentucky. The primary reasons for its construction were a means for flood control and the production of hydroelectric power. Its shoreline measures 1,255 miles and the lake is spread over 65,530 acres at the top of the power pool. The reservoir ranks 9th in the U.S. in size, with a capacity of 6.1 million acre-feet of water, enough to cover the entire Commonwealth of Kentucky with 3 inches of water. The main lake is 101 miles long and over one mile across at its widest point. The lake has become a major source of tourism and an economic engine for south-central Kentucky.

Fishing Description:

Smallmouth bass have an excellent forecast and are good winter fishery. Plenty of 15-18 inch fish present. Some 20-inch plus fish available. Spotted bass also have an excellent forecast with numerous fish available and a good density of relatively large 13-17 inch fish. There are good numbers of largemouth bass in the 15-18 inch range and a few fish exceeding 20 inches. The striped bass forecast is good with several year-classes of fish available; there should be good catches of 8-15 pound fish, with fish larger than 15 pounds caught occasionally. Fish in the strong 2006 year class should approach legal size (24 inches) late in 2008. The white bass population density remains low but is improving. For best success, try headwater areas in early spring.

White crappie should have relatively good numbers of 7-9” crappie with a fair population of larger crappie. There is a fairly low density population of black crappie but should be adequate numbers of 8-10 inch crappie with occasional catches of larger crappie.

Numerous 6-7 inch bluegill available.

Good numbers of 13-20 inch channel catfish available with occasional catches of larger fish.

Expect another good year for walleye fishing at Lake Cumberland. Good density of 3-5 pound fish with a few fish over 6 pounds.
