Description: 

Delavan Lake is located in the city and town of Delavan in Walworth County. The lake is fed and drained by Jackson Creek, a tributary of Turtle Creek that drains to the Lower Rock River. A dam at the lake’s outlet is used to control water levels. The lake has a surface area of approximately 2,072 acres, a maximum depth of about 56 feet, a volume of approximately 44,800 acre-feet, and a mean depth of about 21 feet. Delavan Lake has a shoreline length of about 13 miles, which is almost entirely developed for residential uses with the exception of a few wetland areas, most of which are discussed in this report.

Fishing Description: 

Delavan Lake supports a moderately diverse fish population. There is presence of 16 fish species including: walleye, yellow perch, northern pike, muskellunge, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, bluegill, pumpkinseed, green sunfish, black crappie, rock bass, black bullhead, white sucker, mimic shiner, fathead minnow, and common carp.

This lake supports excellent populations of walleyes, northern pike and largemouth bass. Estimates are a total of 11,800 adult walleyes, or 5.7 per acre, which is excellent for stocked lakes. These walleyes are in excellent condition and many are larger than the 18-inch minimum size limit. There are also estimates of 4,970 adult northern pike, or 2.4 per acre, which is very good and representative of healthy naturally reproducing populations. Angler catches of fish exceeding 32 inches are fairly common.

Samples of largemouth bass have been found up to 25 inches. They are in excellent condition and most bass are between 12 and 18 inches with nine percent 18 inches or larger. Smallmouth bass aren’t quite as abundant but size structure is excellent. Smallmouth average 16 inches, with some sampled fish up to 19 inches.

Samples of muskies were found up to 48 inches, although there were not abundant. The lake has plenty of bluegills, with the average size six inches but also fish eight inches and larger. If you like big crappies, Delavan Lake has them. Average length is eight inches and there are crappies 12 inches and larger out there.
